McAllen Medical Center Volunteer Program

At the South Texas Health System, we have more than 350 student and adult volunteers helping us provide high-quality service to patients and their families. Because South Texas Health System is the largest hospital system in the Rio Grande Valley, there are many opportunities to choose from. You can volunteer during the day, in the evening or on weekends. If you have four hours a week to make a difference in someone’s life, please join the two South Texas Health System volunteer organizations.


To ensure your application is considered, please follow the suggested application deadlines:

  • To start in the fall submit by August 15
  • To start in the spring submit by December 15
  • To start in the summer submit by May 1

Student Volunteers—Comprised of young men and women (15 years minimum), many from local high schools, South Texas College and the University of Texas Pan American, who volunteer for educational goals and work experience. Volunteers are accepted three times per year for fall, spring or summer semester placement. Junior volunteers serve about 48 hours per semester or four hours per week.

Texas A&M Health Ambassador


Texas A&M has an amazing program that promotes healthy living and lifestyles. It’s called the A&M Youth Ambassador Program.

Do You Want To:

  • Serve as a community health and wellness advocate
  • Assist county Extension agents in providing leadership to the youth
    components of Healthy South Texas
  • Serve as a leader to implement the Fuel Up To Play 60 Program in local schools
  • Become knowledgeable and skilled in the healthy lifestyles subject matter
  • Coordinate educational events that will encourage better health in your community


  • Youth must be at least 9th grade students at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.
  • Membership open to all regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, national origin and disability.
  • Ambassadors will serve a two-year term, with terms beginning in the later Spring/Summer prior to the start of the school year.
  • Ambassadors may serve consecutive terms but must re-apply if they wish to renew membership.
  • Ambassadors are required to participate in an ambassador training.
  • Ambassadors are expected to attend all face-to-face and online meetings as well as complete the plans and submit reports as required.
  • Complete and report 50 hours of leadership, program efforts, or community service projects per year.
  • Any costs associated with participating in ambassador trainings and/or meetings, including travel, registration fees, ambassador shirt, etc., are the responsibility of each individual ambassador.

Doctors Hospital Renaissance Summer Volunteer Program

Future Health Care Professionals!

The Doctors Hospital Renaissance (DHR) VolunTEEN Program is an excellent way to get involved with one of our local hospitals, get volunteer hours, get cool benefits with the hospital, and learn about the medical profession!

Here is the scoop:

VolunTEEN Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 18 as of June 11, 2018.
  • Be willing to fully commit to our 8 week program. The program will run from June 11th – August 5th.
  • Be able to serve at least 8 hours per week during the summer. A commitment of at least 60 total hours is required.
  • Complete a 500-word essay, stating your reason(s) for volunteering.
  • Schedule/ attend a group interview with Volunteer Services.
  • Complete and pass a health screening and TB test.
  • Attend a mandatory four-hour orientation day on either Saturday, May 19th or Sunday, May 20th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
